Two students were beaten to death and two others injured during a late-night attack at Government Secondary School, Bichi, in Kano State, after they were accused of homosexuality by fellow students.
The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. on Monday. Witnesses said a group of students targeted four of their classmates over allegations of same-sex relations. The situation quickly escalated into a brutal assault that left two students dead on the spot.
“One of the teachers informed us that a crisis broke out in the school, initially described as a fight between students. It later became clear that the victims were accused of homosexuality, and the attackers beat them severely. Two of the students died on the spot, while another was rushed to the hospital,” a source told Daily Trust.
Another source later confirmed that two students were injured and are currently receiving treatment at Bichi General Hospital.
Following the attack, the Kano State Police Command announced the arrest of 11 suspects linked to the killings. Police spokesperson SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa said investigations are ongoing and that all those found guilty will face the law.
The Kano State Commissioner for Education, Ali Haruna Makoda, speaking through the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Bashir Baffa, condemned the incident and ordered a full investigation.
“This is an unfortunate and tragic event. The Kano State Government is committed to a thorough, fair, and transparent investigation to uncover the truth and ensure justice is served,” Makoda said.
He also expressed sympathy for the victims’ families. “We pray that Almighty Allah grants the victims Jannatul Firdaus,” he added.
Reacting to the incident, the Director of the Kano State Senior Secondary School Management Board, Alhaji Abbas Abdullahi, described the attack as deeply disturbing and called on students to act with restraint.
He warned against mob justice and urged students to report grievances through proper channels rather than resorting to violence.
