The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has faulted the Niger State Governor, Mohammed Bago, over his order to shut down Badeggi Radio, describing the move as unlawful and a threat to press freedom.
In a strongly worded statement released in Abuja and signed by its president, Eze Anaba, and general secretary, Onuoha Ukeh, the Guild said the governor acted beyond his authority.
“This act of censorship and intimidation undermines the fundamental principles of a democratic society where free press is essential for holding those in power accountable,” the Guild stated.
It reminded the public that Section 39 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) guarantees freedom of expression and of the press, adding that Article 9 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights—which Nigeria is a signatory to—also backs these freedoms.
“The power to sanction television and radio stations only lies with the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) after a thorough investigation of any alleged breach of the Code,” the Guild said.
It welcomed the clarification by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Malam Mohammed Idris, who acknowledged the governor had no legal basis for the closure. “This should go beyond observing the anomaly,” the Guild added, demanding immediate action.
“The Federal Government should order the unsealing of the premises of the radio station, while investigation is carried out,” it insisted.
The Guild described the governor’s action as a troubling throwback to Nigeria’s military era when media houses were routinely shut down without due process.
While acknowledging that the governor’s allegation of incitement of violence is serious, the Guild emphasized that any such claim must be properly investigated and proven before taking punitive measures.
“We urge the media to operate under strict adherence to the code of ethics of journalism, with responsible conduct at the back of the minds of the professionals,” the statement read.
It also urged public authorities to respect citizens’ rights to information and freedom of expression, stressing that Badeggi Radio should be reopened while the matter is being investigated.
Reaffirming the role of the press in democracy, the Guild concluded by demanding that all levels of government “must respect and uphold this fundamental right.”
