IBB @ 84: Babangida’s Reforms Still Relevant, Says Tambuwal

Former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has celebrated former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (GCFR), describing him as a true icon of leadership whose reforms have continued to shape the country’s political and socio-economic development.

Tambuwal stated this in a goodwill message on the occasion of Babangida’s 84th birthday.

He said despite the passage of time, the legacy of the former military ruler remained visible in the lives of Nigerians through the institutions he established while in office.

“General Babangida is not only a distinguished former Head of State but also a visionary leader whose dedication to national unity and institution building has left an enduring mark on our nation’s history,” he said.

Tambuwal noted that Babangida would be remembered for relocating the nation’s capital from Lagos to Abuja, a move he said symbolised unity and reshaped the country’s geographical and political outlook.

He listed some of the institutions initiated during the Babangida administration to include the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), National Directorate of Employment (NDE), National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), National Electoral Commission (NEC), and Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA).

“His years in service were defined by bold reforms and landmark initiatives that continue to shape the trajectory of Nigeria,” Tambuwal said, adding that Babangida’s vision for national development and security also led to the creation of agencies such as SSS/DSS, NIA and DIA.

Describing the former military leader as a repository of wisdom, resilience and statesmanship, Tambuwal prayed for Babangida’s long life and good health.

“On behalf of my family, I celebrate this milestone with him and pray for his continued good health, peace of mind and fulfilment. May Almighty Allah grant him many more years of guidance and blessings,” he said.
