The Kano branch of the Nigerian Society of Physiotherapy (NSP) has elected Dr Aysha Idris Adhama as its new Chairperson, becoming the first woman to head the professional body in Northern Nigeria.
The election of a new executive followed the expiration of the highly successful tenure of Prof Bashir Kaka.
The new leadership emerged during the branch’s Annual General Meeting at the association’s secretariat in Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.
Dr Adhama, the Deputy Director, Department of Physiotherapy, Khalifa Isyaku Rabiu Paediatrics Hospital, will pilot the affairs of the branch from 2025 to 2027.
Other elected officers are Dr Muhammad Aliyu Abba as Vice Chairman; Dr Huzaifa Shehu Imam, Secretary General; Dr Hafsat Hussein, Assistant Secretary; Dr Farida Abubakar, Treasurer; Dr Usman Abubakar, Financial Secretary; and Dr Dauda Muhammad Dan Arewa, Auditor.
Similarly, Dr Bashir Bello Gaya emerged Publicity Secretary, while Dr Hauwa Abubakar was elected Welfare Officer to complete the nine–member executive.
The incoming executives are expected to consolidate on the achievements of past leaders and “spearhead initiatives focused on professional growth and community involvement”.
In her acceptance speech, Dr Adhama said she was “profoundly humbled and grateful” for the confidence reposed in her, pledging to justify the trust for the advancement of the society.
