Ex-INEC Boss Jega Chairs BUK Endowment Board’s Maiden Meeting

The newly inaugurated Board of Trustees of the Bayero University, Kano (BUK) Endowment Fund has convened its maiden meeting in Abuja, signalling a fresh push for sustainable funding and institutional development.

Chaired by former INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, the meeting brought together eminent Nigerians, including Ambassador Prof. Tijjani Bande and Chief Kola Akosile, to chart a new course for the fund.

The board, which met on Tuesday, 19th August, 2025, marked the beginning of efforts by the university to reduce dependence on government subventions through long-term financial support from alumni, development partners, and friends of the institution.

BUK Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Haruna Musa, described the development as “a decisive moment in the university’s journey,” adding that the endowment fund would serve as a backbone for the institution’s innovation and self-reliance.

During the session, the trustees considered the governance structure, investment options, and priority areas, stressing transparency and accountability as vital to earning public confidence.

The initiative is expected to strengthen the university’s capacity to deliver quality teaching, promote cutting-edge research, and upgrade infrastructure in line with global standards.
