Former Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Mr Peter Obi, says unemployment and poverty are fuelling the insecurity ravaging the country.
Obi, in a post on his official X handle on Wednesday, described the murder of 13 worshippers at a mosque in Katsina State as another needless bloodletting.
Thirteen worshippers were reportedly killed when bandits attacked a mosque in Unguwan Mantau Community, Malumfashi Local Government Area of Katsina State.
The former Anambra State governor, who condemned the killing, said it was unacceptable, especially when it involved people who had gone to worship.
He said the incident further showed how human life had been “debased” in Nigeria.
While commiserating with the bereaved families and worshipping community, Obi wrote: “Rising from the euphoria of the recent improved performance of our security operatives—which led to the arrest of critical terrorist elements and attracted commendation both from me and internationally—ugly and deplorable news has now emerged from Katsina State: the brutal killing of 13 worshippers in a mosque.
“So long as we fail to address crucial social challenges such as unemployment, and so long as we continue to operate a system that drives more people into multidimensional poverty, we will continue to experience these ugly consequences,” he added.
