NiMet forecasts floods in eight states this week

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted possible flooding in eight states between Thursday and Saturday.

The states are Niger, Kogi, Benue, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Cross River and Ebonyi.

NiMet, in its weather outlook issued in Abuja on Wednesday, warned of thunderstorms and moderate rains across the northern and central regions, with intermittent light rains expected in the southern region.

The agency said thunderstorms with moderate rains would affect parts of Borno, Yobe, Gombe, Bauchi, Adamawa and Taraba on Thursday morning, extending to Jigawa, Kaduna and other states by evening.

It also predicted cloudy skies with thunderstorms over Nasarawa, Benue, Niger, Plateau and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) later in the day.

In the southern region, NiMet forecast light rains over Cross River and Akwa Ibom in the morning, with intermittent rains expected in Rivers, Bayelsa and other states by evening.

For Friday, the agency said thunderstorms with moderate rains were likely in parts of Katsina, Kano, Adamawa, Taraba, Yobe, Borno, Jigawa, Kaduna, Gombe and Bauchi in the morning, while similar weather would extend to Kebbi and other states in the afternoon.

It projected cloudy skies and light rains in parts of FCT, Nasarawa, Niger and Plateau in the morning, with rainfall expected over Benue, Kwara and other central states later in the day.

In the south, NiMet anticipated intermittent light rains across Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Ekiti, Anambra, Ebonyi, Abia, Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River and Akwa Ibom.

On Saturday, it forecast thunderstorms with moderate rains in Taraba, Adamawa, Gombe, Borno, Yobe and Bauchi in the morning, spreading to Katsina, Kebbi, Jigawa, Kano, Kaduna, Zamfara and Sokoto by afternoon.

The agency further predicted light rains across the FCT, Niger, Kogi, Plateau, Nasarawa and Kwara.

It warned of a “high possibility” of flooding in Niger, Kogi, Benue, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Cross River and Ebonyi during the forecast period.
