Police in Kano State have arrested two men accused of running a phone theft ring and recovered 23 mobile phones, three point-of-sale machines and other items, authorities said on Saturday.
Police spokesman Abdullahi Haruna said the suspects, Umar Aliyu, 25, and Sabiu Kabiru, 27, were detained on Aug. 7 in Gezawa Local Government Area following intelligence reports.
A search uncovered 10 Android and 13 keypad phones, three POS machines, 17 Opay debit cards, three MP3 players, eight phone batteries and a power bank, Haruna said.
“The suspects initially confessed to breaking into a business centre in Dinyar Madiga Village, Takai Local Government Area, but further investigation revealed inconsistencies in their claims,” he said.
The police command said the recovered items would be displayed at its headquarters to help identify the rightful owners.
Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Adamu Bakori praised the officers involved and pledged to maintain efforts to curb crime in the state.
