A woman identified as Amaye has been lynched and set ablaze by a mob in Kasuwan-Garba, Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State, over alleged blasphemous remarks against Prophet Muhammad.
The incident occurred on Saturday evening at the woman’s restaurant after she was accused of making derogatory statements following a customer’s comment.
Reports said residents initially took her to the palace of the District Head of Kasuwan-Garba to avert mob action. She was later handed over to security operatives for investigation.
However, the mob overpowered the operatives and lynched her before setting her body ablaze.
Chairman of Mariga LGA, Abbas Adamu Kasuwan-Garba, who confirmed the development, said normalcy had been restored in the town.
Spokesman of the Niger State Police Command, SP Wasiu Abiodun, also confirmed the incident.
Abiodun said the victim “was set ablaze before the reinforcement of the security teams.”
“Meanwhile, efforts are being made to ensure that arrests are effected, investigated and prosecuted,” the police spokesman added.
