The Federal Government, yesterday, unveiled the 1Government Cloud platform, a sovereign digital system designed to drive paperless governance across Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs.
Developed under the Sovereign Digitalisation Programme by Galaxy Backbone Limited, the platform is expected to modernise public service delivery, strengthen data sovereignty, and align Nigeria with global best practices in digital governance.
Pioneer adopters of the system include the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy; Ministry of Solid Minerals; Ministry of Steel Development; Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Federal Ministry of Justice; Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria; and the Ministry of Intergovernmental Affairs.
Speaking on the initiative, Programme Director of 1Government Cloud, Mr. Wumi Oghoetuoma, said the project will drastically cut costs, improve efficiency, and enhance transparency in governance.
According to him, “the paperless governance initiative will eliminate bureaucratic bottlenecks by streamlining approvals and inter-agency communication. It will also reduce the huge expenditure on printing, storage and distribution of files, while promoting accountability and transparency.”
Oghoetuoma further explained that the system provides encrypted storage for sensitive government documents, ensures faster decision-making, and strengthens inter-agency collaboration in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda.
He said the target of achieving a fully paperless civil service by December 2025, as set by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, is realistic with the phased implementation currently underway.
Managing Director/CEO of Galaxy Backbone, Professor Ibrahim Adeyanju, described the initiative as a “strategic shift” in Nigeria’s digital transformation.
“With 1Gov, Nigeria is entering a new era of governance—faster decision-making, more secure documentation, and ultimately, better services for citizens. This is about building a government that is smart, responsive, and globally competitive,” Adeyanju said.
The 1Government Cloud comes with several inbuilt features, including GovDrive for encrypted file management, GovECMS for workflow automation, GovMail for secure communication, GovE-Sign for electronic approvals, and GovConference for encrypted inter-ministerial meetings.
Other components include GovOTP for secure authentication, GovAsset Management for tracking public assets, and GovCollaboration for inter-agency teamwork.
The statement noted that the adoption by pioneer MDAs sets the stage for nationwide rollout, adding that Nigeria has now joined the ranks of countries deploying sovereign smart government solutions for effective service delivery.
