OPay partners BUK, unveils ₦60m scholarship for students

Nigeria’s leading financial institution, OPay Digital Services Ltd. on Tuesday launched a ₦60 million scholarship programme for students of Bayero University, Kano (BUK).

Kano Times reports that the initiative followed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the company and the institution.

Prof. Haruna Musa, Vice-Chancellor of the university, signed the agreement on behalf of BUK.

The programme was facilitated by the Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the university, in collaboration with the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).

Speaking at the event, Musa commended OPay for selecting BUK among the beneficiaries of the intervention.

“This scholarship will go a long way in boosting the morale of our students. I urge the beneficiaries to use the opportunity wisely, and I also call on OPay to sustain this generous gesture,” he said.

Earlier, Mr. Itoro Udo, Corporate Social Responsibility Manager of OPay, said the fintech company, with over 16 million active users in Nigeria, remained committed to empowering young people through education.

He explained that BUK was among 20 universities selected for the 10-year scholarship programme.

According to him, 20 students will receive ₦300,000 each annually for the next decade.

Prof. Shamsuddeen Umar, Dean of Students’ Affairs, described the intervention as timely and impactful, adding that many students were struggling to meet their financial obligations.
