EFCC detains ex-NNPC GCEO Mele Kyari over alleged fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has detained the former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, Mele Kyari.

Kyari, who arrived at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja at about 2:15 p.m. on Wednesday, is being questioned over alleged financial and technical irregularities during his tenure.

Sources said the interrogation is linked to the controversial $7.2bn refinery turnaround maintenance programme.

The development comes weeks after the anti-graft agency placed Kyari on its watchlist, following mounting allegations of fraud in the operations of the national oil company under his leadership.

It will be recalled that a Federal High Court in Abuja recently ordered the temporary freezing of four bank accounts allegedly linked to him, pending further investigations.
