The journey of a thousand miles often begins with a single step. For Dr. Maryam Shettima, it began with We Believe and has now expanded into We Recite—a project that continues to inspire thousands across Nigeria.
While We Believe is centered on good governance, the recently concluded We Recite competition, held in Kano, was a national virtual Qur’anic contest—the first of its kind in the country. What made it unique was the use of TikTok, a platform often known for noise and distraction, as a space to showcase the beauty of the Qur’an.
The idea draws inspiration from history. The first physical Qur’anic competition was held in Malaysia in 1961. Sixty-four years later, Dr. Maryam Shettima has brought its virtual version to Nigeria, offering a new model for digital engagement with the Qur’an.
Recite With Shetty is not just another competition. It is about rekindling love for the Qur’an, giving young people a noble purpose in their online activities, and reminding them that their voices can illuminate the digital world.
The initiative was widely embraced, with more than one thousand youths participating. Winners left not only with cash prizes but also with the prayers and blessings of respected scholars who graced the event.
Relevant stakeholders should join hands with Dr. Maryam Shettima to make future editions even more colorful and impactful than the maiden one. There is also hope that it will grow into an international event, complementing the physical Qur’anic competitions held annually.
