Rivers Assembly to Probe State Finances under Ibas’ Rule

By Barde Kure, Rivers

The Rivers State House of Assembly has announced plans to probe the finances of the state during the six-month tenure of Rear Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd) as sole administrator.

The Assembly, which resumed plenary on Thursday following the suspension of emergency rule in the state, also urged Governor Siminalayi Fubara to transmit the list of commissioner nominees for screening.

Speaker Martins Amaewhule presided over the plenary at the legislative quarters’ conference hall, which is still undergoing reconstruction after being demolished months ago by the state government.

President Bola Tinubu had on Wednesday lifted the emergency rule, restoring all democratic structures in Rivers State.

The emergency rule was initially declared on March 18 following a prolonged political crisis triggered by disagreements between Governor Fubara and former Governor Nyesom Wike.

During the emergency period, Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Nma Odu, and the state lawmakers were suspended for six months, while Ibas was appointed to oversee the administration of the state.

With the resumption of legislative activities, the Rivers Assembly is expected to conduct a thorough review of the financial records under Ibas’ administration to ensure accountability and transparency.
