Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day will be marked with subdued ceremonies this year, the government announced on Monday, emphasizing reflection over fanfare as the country navigates mounting social and economic challenges.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, told reporters in Abuja that the celebration, themed “All Hands on Deck,” would be deliberately modest. Events have already included Friday’s Juma’at prayers and a Thanksgiving service on Sunday, he said.
Central to this year’s observance will be the unveiling of the National Value Charter, a framework developed by the National Orientation Agency to foster civic responsibility and strengthen national unity.
The document is divided into two sections: the “Nigerian Promise,” outlining the government’s pledge to uphold values such as equality, democracy, peace, inclusivity and meritocracy, and the “Citizen’s Commitment,” which calls on Nigerians to demonstrate accountability, discipline, tolerance and resilience.
Mr. Idris said additional activities, including a national student debate, will round out the commemoration. Officials hope the charter will not only articulate government obligations but also inspire citizens to embrace a renewed sense of duty in a country struggling with economic strain, insecurity and political division.
The campaign, he added, will be driven through community engagement and digital platforms in an effort to root the values in everyday life.
“This is not just about celebrating our independence,” Mr. Idris said. “It is about recommitting ourselves — government and citizens alike — to building a more united and value-driven society.”
