Kano Police Nab 27-Year-Old Over Village Head’s Kidnapping, Robbery

Police in northern Nigeria’s Kano State have arrested a 27-year-old man accused of involvement in a kidnapping and armed robbery that took place more than two years ago, authorities said on Saturday.

The suspect, identified as Usman Lawan Baba, also known as “Yellow,” was detained on Oct. 2 in Bebeji Local Government Area, police spokesperson Abdullahi Haruna said in a statement.

Baba is accused of taking part in the abduction of a village head, Abdulmumini Mudi Zakari, in Garun Babba in August 2023. Zakari was kidnapped and robbed of 2.75 million naira ($1,850), a mobile phone and a wristwatch, Haruna said. The victim was later rescued by police.

The suspect confessed to the crime and admitted receiving 6,000 naira as his share, according to police. He also identified accomplices, including two men killed in separate police operations and one currently serving a prison sentence.

Police said further investigations are under way and the suspect will be charged in court.

Kano State Police Commissioner Ibrahim Bakori praised residents for supporting security efforts. Police reported that 107 suspects were arrested in September for crimes ranging from kidnapping and robbery to drug trafficking and vehicle theft.
