The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has sought closer collaboration with the Kano Road Traffic Agency (KAROTA) in efforts to curb illegal mining and related economic crimes across Kano State.
Acting Zonal Director of the EFCC, Deputy Commander Sa’ad Hanafi Sa’ad, made the call on Friday during a courtesy visit to KAROTA’s Managing Director, Engineer Faisal Mahmoud, at the agency’s headquarters in Kano.
Sa’ad said KAROTA’s wide operational coverage and manpower presence on major and inner-city routes could be instrumental in identifying and disrupting the movement of illegally mined minerals within the state.
He urged KAROTA to assist the anti-graft agency in monitoring and tracking transport routes commonly used by illegal miners, noting that such intelligence would help the EFCC intercept and prosecute offenders involved in the illicit trade that harms the environment and deprives the government of vital revenue.
Responding, Mahmoud expressed KAROTA’s commitment to supporting the EFCC’s mission, saying the agency is ready to cooperate fully with the Commission.
He called on the EFCC to outline its specific intelligence needs to ensure coordinated efforts, pledging to provide all necessary logistical and operational support to enhance the fight against illegal mining in Kano.
