A civil society organisation, Stand Up Nigeria (SUN), has commended the Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, for what it described as his courageous and proactive leadership following the killing of eight officers in Edo State.
The commendation follows last week’s attack in Okpella, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State, where armed men ambushed and killed eight NSCDC personnel attached to BUA Cement Company while they were on routine patrol escorting Chinese expatriates.
In a statement issued in Abuja, the National Coordinator of the group, Comrade Sunny Attah, praised Audi for his swift response to the tragedy, particularly the deployment of special tactical squads to track down those behind the killings.
“The prompt and robust action taken by Commandant General Audi demonstrates a hands-on and courageous style of leadership, which is what our security system needs at this time,” the statement said.
It added that the mobilisation of specialised units, including the Counter Terrorism Unit and the Special Intelligence Squad, to restore order in the area showed the NSCDC’s determination to ensure that the sacrifice of its personnel would not be in vain.
SUN noted that Audi’s decisive steps have boosted morale among security operatives and reassured the public of the Corps’ commitment to safeguarding lives and property despite the challenges facing the sector.
The group also called on heads of other security agencies to emulate Audi’s sense of duty and commitment to justice for fallen officers.
Earlier, the NSCDC Commandant General had condemned the attack, vowing to collaborate with other security agencies to arrest the perpetrators and rescue the abducted expatriate.
He also assured that the Corps would prioritise the welfare of the slain officers’ families.
SUN further urged members of the public to support security agencies by providing credible information that could help in apprehending criminals and strengthening peace and security across the country.
