Kano, Katsina, Jigawa partner on regional power market

The governments of Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa States have agreed to form a tri-state electricity market and acquire equity stakes in Future Energies Africa (FEA), the core investor in the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), the Kano State Government said in a statement.

The announcement, signed by Saad Umar Faruk, Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy, said the decision followed a high-level meeting at the Electrification Summit held in Marrakech, Morocco, from October 16 to 19, 2025.

Quoting the Kano State Commissioner for Power and Renewable Energy, Dr. Gaddafi Sani Shehu, the statement said the collaboration aims to deepen cooperation among the three states and boost electricity supply across the region.

“The three states will collaborate to explore areas of mutual benefit in their electricity markets, promoting partner regulation and cooperation,” Dr. Gaddafi said.

He added that the states would jointly acquire equity in Future Energies Africa (FEA) to strengthen KEDCO’s strategic direction and improve electricity distribution within the region.

According to the commissioner, the three states will also establish a ₦50 billion Electrification Fund to accelerate access to power through embedded generation, solar home systems, grid extensions, and mini-grids.

“The states will work closely with KEDCO to reduce losses from residential consumers, ensuring improved and sustainable electricity supply to citizens,” he added.

Dr. Gaddafi noted that representatives from the three states will hold an annual international retreat and quarterly review meetings to assess progress, set policy direction, and reinforce the partnership’s framework.

“This landmark agreement marks a significant step towards improving electricity access and supply in the region, promoting economic growth, and enhancing the quality of life for citizens,” he said.
