Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State has inaugurated a Technical Committee to study and implement the new Federal Tax Reform Policy in the state, in line with the Federal Government’s ongoing fiscal reforms aimed at broadening the revenue base, improving efficiency, and ensuring fairness in Nigeria’s tax system.
The governor inaugurated the committee on Tuesday at the Council Chambers of the Government House, Dutse.
In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Hamisu Mohammed Gumel, Namadi said the initiative was part of efforts to strengthen the state’s fiscal capacity and enhance service delivery.
“It is my pleasure to welcome you to this important occasion for the inauguration of the Technical Committee for the investigation and implementation of the new tax reform policy, which is expected to take effect across the country from January 2026,” the governor said.
He noted that the timely implementation of the reforms was crucial to strengthening fiscal capacity, improving service delivery, and promoting inclusive growth.
According to the statement, the committee is mandated to study the new Federal Tax Framework, identify and recommend areas for domestication at the state level, develop an implementation roadmap, and propose necessary strategic and administrative adjustments.
It is also expected to engage relevant stakeholders, including the business community and civil society organisations, to ensure public awareness and compliance with the new tax law.
Namadi urged the members to discharge their duties diligently and with integrity, noting that “the committee will submit an initial report within two weeks, a direct implementation roadmap within six weeks, and a final report of recommendations within two months.”
He further disclosed that the committee would collaborate with development partners, particularly the Fiscal Accountability and Capacity Enhancement (FACE) Programme, under the leadership of Ms. Adeniyi.
“This partnership will further enrich our work and strengthen our institutional capacity,” the governor said.
Namadi charged the members to approach their assignment with professionalism and patriotism.
“The task before you is both urgent and important. We cannot afford to lag behind in the current reforms set for implementation by January 2026,” he said.
Responding on behalf of the committee, the Chairperson and Commissioner of Finance, Prof. Hannatu Sabo Mohammed, expressed appreciation to the governor for the confidence reposed in them.
“It is my singular honour and privilege to stand before you to express our profound gratitude to His Excellency for appointing me and all the members that make up this important body—the Technical Committee for the Domestication of the New Tax Reform Policy,” she said.
Prof. Hannatu assured the governor of the committee’s commitment to deliver on its mandate.
“We accept this duty wholeheartedly, and we assure you that we will carry out our responsibilities with full dedication, diligence, and the highest sense of responsibility expected of us,” she said.
She described the composition of the committee as inclusive and professional, adding that “looking at the caliber and composition of the members of this committee, Your Excellency can be confident that we will approach our work with professionalism, commitment, and integrity.”
Prof. Hannatu commended the governor’s foresight, describing the initiative as visionary.
“This proactive step places Jigawa State in a leading position as a model for implementing national fiscal reforms. It is indeed a giant stride, and we congratulate His Excellency for his foresight and leadership,” she added.
