Kano State’s Hisbah Board has cancelled the much-publicised wedding between two popular TikTok content creators, Idris Mai Wushirya and Basira ‘Yar Guda, after determining that their relationship was not genuine but a ploy to evade legal consequences.
Dr. Mujahedeen Aminuddeen, Deputy Commander of Hisbah, said on Saturday that an internal investigation revealed the couple had no sincere intention of marriage.
“We discovered that the proposed marriage was not genuine but a means to escape legal issues. So, we cancelled it to prevent future problems,” Aminuddeen told reporters.
He said the couple had undergone medical compatibility tests before the process was halted. The case, he added, may return to court if unresolved.
The pair had earlier faced trial at a Kano magistrate court on charges of immoral conduct filed by the state’s Censorship Board after a controversial video appeared on Wushirya’s social media page.
Magistrate Halima Wali had deferred judgment, referring the matter to Hisbah to facilitate a lawful Islamic marriage after both TikTokers claimed they were in love and intended to wed. The court gave the board 60 days to confirm whether the marriage took place.
Public reaction to the ruling sparked criticism, with many accusing the court of attempting to enforce a marriage. But judiciary spokesperson Baba Jibo clarified that the decision was misinterpreted.
“The court never ordered a forced marriage,” he said. “It only granted them time to marry since they both claimed to love each other.”
He added that Basira ‘Yar Guda had insisted she would only marry Idris if he provided his own house rather than a rented one, prompting the court to delay its verdict to allow the process under Islamic law.
