Nigeria’s meteorological agency on Sunday forecast a mix of dust haze and rainfall across different parts of the country between Monday and Wednesday, warning residents to stay alert to changing weather conditions.
In a three-day weather outlook, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) said slight dust haze with good visibility was expected over Borno, Zamfara, northern Kaduna, Yobe, Jigawa, Kano and Katsina States on Monday. It added that isolated thunderstorms with light rain could occur later in the day over Taraba and Adamawa States.
NiMet said the central region would experience sunny skies with patches of clouds, with isolated thunderstorms and light rain likely over the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nasarawa and Kogi States in the afternoon. Cloudy conditions are forecast in the southern region in the morning, followed by thunderstorms and moderate rainfall later in the day across Cross River, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Ondo, Osun, Lagos, Ekiti, Ogun, Edo, Bayelsa and Delta States.
For Tuesday, the agency predicted that slight dust haze would persist in the north, while parts of Taraba and Adamawa may continue to experience isolated thunderstorms and light rain. The central region is expected to record early morning thunderstorms in Benue and moderate rainfall later in the day over the FCT, Nasarawa and Kogi States.
NiMet also projected cloudy skies across southern states, with moderate rainfall in Rivers, Cross River, Ebonyi and Akwa Ibom in the morning, likely to intensify as the day progresses. It warned of possible flooding in Akwa Ibom, Rivers and Cross River States, advising local authorities to activate emergency response measures where needed.
On Wednesday, sunny skies are forecast across the northern region, with isolated thunderstorms and light rain expected later in the day, particularly in Taraba. The central region will see sunny skies with patches of clouds, while isolated thunderstorms with light rain are likely over Kogi and the FCT.
In the southern region, cloudy conditions are expected in the morning, followed by thunderstorms and moderate rain across Lagos, Ogun, Rivers, Delta and Akwa Ibom in the afternoon and evening.
NiMet cautioned motorists to drive carefully during rainfall and advised residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant. It also urged people with asthma or other respiratory conditions to minimize outdoor exposure due to dust particles in the atmosphere over northern states.
Airline operators were advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports for flight planning, while the public was encouraged to follow NiMet updates through its website and official communication channels.
