70 years of service: Women changing the face of Nigeria Police — Egbetokun

The Nigeria Police Force says it will celebrate 70 years of women in policing, honouring the courage and contributions of female officers since the first set was enlisted in 1955.

This was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, at the Force Headquarters, Abuja.

According to the statement, the celebration, slated for Dec. 3 and 4, 2025, “marks seven decades of courage, resilience, and dedicated service since the first set of policewomen were enlisted in 1955.”

Hundeyin quoted the I-G as saying that the milestone “underscores the vital role of women in strengthening law enforcement and fostering community trust across the nation.”

He added that the Inspector-General would join serving and retired female officers to commemorate the historic occasion.

Egbetokun commended the invaluable contributions of female officers to the operational effectiveness and public image of the Force, noting that “their dedication and compassion have continued to be integral to the foundation of policing in Nigeria.”

He said that over the years, women in the Force had “distinguished themselves in various capacities, from administration and investigations to tactical operations and command leadership.”

“They have embodied integrity, empathy, and excellence in service to the nation. Through their selfless commitment, they have redefined policing with compassion and purpose,” the I-G was further quoted as saying.

Hundeyin said the activities lined up for the anniversary include a national lecture, historical exhibition, interactive panel sessions, and an outreach programme.

He added that the event “reinforces the I-G’s commitment to promoting inclusivity, professionalism, and continuous capacity development for women in policing.”

The statement further expressed the appreciation of the Nigeria Police Force to all female officers, past and present, “whose courage and professionalism remain a source of pride and inspiration to the institution and the nation.”
