The Nigerian Army on Thursday witnessed a smooth change of leadership as Maj.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu formally assumed duty as the 25th Chief of Army Staff (COAS).
Shaibu took over from Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, who has been appointed the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), at a brief but colourful ceremony held at Army Headquarters, Abuja.
According to a statement signed by Lt.-Col. Appolonia Anele, Acting Director, Army Public Relations, the event marked another seamless transition in the Army’s top hierarchy.
In his remarks, the new Army Chief commended his predecessor for what he described as “outstanding leadership, mentorship, and unwavering support to the Nigerian Army.”
He lauded Lt.-Gen. Oluyede’s achievements, particularly in equipment procurement, infrastructural development, and the “Soldier First” concept, which prioritizes troop welfare and operational readiness.
“I salute the courage, passion, resilience, and discipline of our troops in the field. Their sacrifices remain the cornerstone of our collective success,” Shaibu said.
He pledged to sustain and build on the legacies of his predecessor while strengthening synergy among security agencies to enhance national security.
The statement also quoted the COAS as saying he would “carefully review the current security situation and respond swiftly to evolving threats,” stressing his commitment to operational efficiency and troop morale.
Shaibu further expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for the confidence reposed in him, leading senior officers in observing a minute of silence in honour of fallen comrades.
In his valedictory remarks, Lt.-Gen. Oluyede expressed gratitude to the President for his leadership and for the opportunity to serve as both COAS and CDS.
He thanked officers and soldiers for their dedication and sacrifice, urging them to remain steadfast under the new leadership.
“The mission remains the same — to ensure the security of lives and defend the territorial integrity of our nation,” Oluyede said.
