Former Kano State Governor and current Senator Ibrahim Shekarau has pledged to remain active in politics, describing his engagement in governance and public service as a lifelong commitment.
Shekarau, who served as governor from 2003 to 2011 and as Minister of Education, made the remarks during a press briefing in Kano to mark his 70th birthday.
“Politics is part of my life’s calling. As long as I live and remain capable, I will never withdraw from political engagement,” he said, noting that his involvement in politics was driven by a sense of moral duty rather than personal gain.
“I am not in politics for position or self-interest. My goal has always been to support the emergence of credible and trustworthy leadership,” he added.
Reflecting on his milestone birthday, Shekarau described reaching 70 as “extra time” granted by God. “At 70, I see myself in extra time — like in football, when you go beyond regulation time. Everything beyond now is a divine bonus, and I thank Allah for it,” he said.
He also expressed gratitude to his late parents, teachers, family, and colleagues for shaping his character, and sought forgiveness for any wrongs he may have committed, while forgiving others who may have offended him.
Shekarau outlined five principles he said guided his success: good conduct, hard work, perseverance, patience, and reliance on God.
He called on Nigerian leaders to prioritise the welfare of citizens, stressing that peace can only be achieved through economic empowerment and justice. “If people are hungry, they will not listen to you. Feed them, empower them, and you will have peace,” he said.
Shekarau reaffirmed his commitment to national development and mentoring younger politicians, saying: “Life is short. Every day beyond 70 is extra time — a gift from God. I will use mine to continue serving humanity.”
