The Senate on Tuesday confirmed Hon. Hafiz Mohammed Kawu, former member of the House of Representatives representing Tarauni Federal Constituency of Kano State, as the Commissioner for Technical at the National Pension Commission (PenCom), representing the North-West geopolitical zone.
His confirmation came alongside that of other nominees who will serve as national commissioners and members of the newly constituted PenCom board. The list of nominees was presented during Tuesday’s plenary session presided over by Deputy Senate President, Barau I. Jibrin.
Reading out the names, Barau announced Hafiz Kawu’s appointment as part of the new leadership structure of PenCom, which is expected to strengthen oversight and policy implementation within Nigeria’s pension administration framework.
The confirmation followed the presentation of the nominees’ report by Cyril Oluwole Fasuyi, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Establishment and Public Service, who urged the Senate to approve all qualified nominees based on merit and competence.
Hon. Hafiz Kawu, a respected public servant and politician, previously served in the House of Representatives where he distinguished himself in legislative duties and constituency development. His appointment to the PenCom board underscores his experience in governance and commitment to public accountability.
Other members confirmed alongside Kawu include Opeyemi Agbaje, who will serve as Chairman of PenCom; Samuel Chigizie Nwandu (Inspectorate) representing the South-East; Charles Efe Sylvester Emukowate (Finance) representing the South-South; and Bello Abubakar Malabu (Administration) representing the North-East.
The new PenCom board is expected to bring renewed vision and expertise to Nigeria’s pension industry, ensuring transparency, accountability, and efficient management of pension assets for the benefit of Nigerian workers.
