The National Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Ajuji Ahmed, said on Saturday the party will retain Kano State and aims to win at least three northern states in the 2027 general elections, despite recent defections.
Ahmed’s remarks followed the departure of two NNPP members of the House of Representatives, Abdulmumin Jibrin and Sagir Koki, who joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The lawmakers cited an ongoing crisis within the NNPP in Kano State as the reason for their switch.
The NNPP has experienced a series of defections in recent months, including Kabiru Usman and Abdullahi Sani from Kano State, as well as members from Jigawa, all moving to the APC since May.
Speaking to reporters, Ahmed said the defections would not weaken the party and expressed goodwill toward the departing members.
“I have just two words for them: ‘good luck.’ Their exit isn’t a minus to my party. It’s even probably better in the sense that a lot more people are flooding into the party, especially in Kano,” he said.
Ahmed added that the NNPP is confident of retaining Kano and targeting Jigawa, Kaduna, and other states, whether contesting alone or in coalition. He also claimed that the party’s victory in Taraba in the last election was “stolen,” signaling potential gainsin 2027.
