Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf on Tuesday presented a ₦1.37 trillion 2026 budget proposal to the State House of Assembly, prioritising capital projects and human development in one of Nigeria’s most populous states.
The proposal allocates 68% of spending – ₦934.6 billion – to capital expenditure, a ratio the government says is among the highest in recent years. Recurrent spending is set at ₦433.4 billion, according to a statement from the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
Yusuf said the allocations reflect his administration’s focus on social services and infrastructure. Education would receive the largest share at ₦405.3 billion (30%), followed by infrastructure at ₦346.2 billion (25%) and health at ₦212.2 billion (16%).
“These allocations demonstrate our determination to invest in human capital, safeguard people’s well-being, and lay the foundation for sustainable growth,” Yusuf told lawmakers.
He added that key sectors including agriculture, security, commerce, water supply, environment, tourism, women and youth development, and support for people with special needs were also given significant provisions in the draft budget.
Yusuf described the spending plan as “a bold but realistic roadmap” aligned with citizens’ priorities, and urged lawmakers to expedite passage of the bill, saying their oversight would be crucial in turning the proposals into tangible services and projects.
