Former Gov. Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State says the ongoing defections among state governors will not deter Nigerians from choosing new leaders in the 2027 general elections.
El-Rufai, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), stated this in Jos on Wednesday at the inauguration of the party’s national contact and mobilisation office.
He said while some Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors were moving to the All Progressives Congress (APC), ordinary Nigerians were shifting their support to the ADC.
El-Rufai expressed confidence that the party had the capacity to unite Plateau and the country if elected in 2027.
He recalled his long personal ties with Plateau, noting that he visited the state frequently in the past but lamented what he described as the deteriorating situation in the state.
He said better leadership at both state and national levels would help restore unity across ethnic and religious lines, enabling Plateau to reclaim its reputation as a home of peace and tourism.
El-Rufai said Nigerians were weary of the APC and the PDP, adding that although some governors were defecting between the two major parties, citizens were increasingly aligning with the ADC.
According to him, Nigerians have resolved to vote for the ADC in 2027, stressing the need for party members to unite and present credible candidates and people-centred policies.
He said the ADC reserved 40 per cent of its leadership positions for youths and 35 per cent for women, describing it as a party that prioritised inclusion.
Jamilu Datti, Plateau coordinator of the ADC contact and mobilisation office, urged youths in the state to support the party.
