The Centre for Human Rights and Social Advancement (CEFSAN) has condemned the recent abduction of 25 schoolgirls from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, describing the incident as a “heinous act” that must be addressed with urgency.
The attackers reportedly stormed the school around 4 a.m. on November 17, killing the Vice Principal and injuring a security guard. CEFSAN said the tragedy echoes past incidents, including the notorious Chibok schoolgirls’ abduction in 2014.
In a statement signed by Yusha’u Sani Yankuzo, Esq., Executive Director of CEFSAN, the organization called for the immediate and safe rescue of the abducted students.
“It is unacceptable that young girls—whose only aspiration is to pursue education—continue to fall victim to criminal attacks,” the statement read. “Every such incident deepens public fear, undermines confidence in the nation’s security architecture, and jeopardizes the future of our children.”
CEFSAN also urged the Federal Government to prioritize citizens’ safety over politics. “The safety and well-being of citizens must remain the highest priority of any responsible government,” the statement emphasized, citing Section 14(2)(b) of Chapter II of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (As Amended). “The continued recurrence of mass abductions, banditry, and violent attacks demonstrates the urgent need for a comprehensive and proactive security strategy, backed by strong political will and swift action.”
The organization further called on security agencies to “intensify coordinated efforts, improve intelligence gathering, and ensure that perpetrators of these atrocities are swiftly brought to justice.”
CEFSAN also highlighted the role of local communities and traditional institutions in strengthening early-warning systems and community-based security initiatives.
“Our thoughts are with the victims, their families, and the entire Kebbi State community during this distressing period,” Yankuzo added. “We stand in solidarity with them and reiterate our unwavering stance that no child should ever have to learn in fear.”
