The Youth Society for the Prevention of Infectious Diseases and Social Vices (YOSPIS) has expressed concern over rising cases of school-related insecurity in parts of the country and called on the Kano State Government to intensify security measures across all schools.
This is contained in a statement issued in Kano by the Executive Director of YOSPIS, Ms. Zainab Nasir Ahmad.
YOSPIS said no community should assume it is insulated from security threats, noting that recent incidents in other states serve as a warning for authorities to act proactively.
“The safety of our children should never be negotiable. We cannot wait for tragedy to strike before taking action,” Ahmad said.
She stressed that schools must remain safe learning environments, adding that, “Kano has a responsibility to ensure that every child who leaves home for school returns safely. Strengthening security infrastructures is not a luxury—it is an urgent necessity.”
The organisation urged the Kano State Government to deploy trained security personnel to schools, particularly in rural and peri-urban areas, and to collaborate with community policing structures to improve surveillance.
It also called for investments in perimeter fencing, alarm systems, controlled access points and emergency response training for teachers, students and parents.
YOSPIS highlighted the role of security agencies, including the police, DSS, NSCDC and other relevant units, and encouraged them to enhance patrols around schools, strengthen intelligence gathering and work closely with community leaders to build rapid alert and response systems.
The group appealed to school administrators to enforce entry and exit controls, develop school safety protocols and maintain effective communication with parents to encourage timely reporting of suspicious activities.
According to the statement, YOSPIS has worked with thousands of young people and remains committed to protecting the dignity, safety and future of every child in the state.
The organisation also reaffirmed its readiness to collaborate with government agencies, security institutions, traditional leaders and civil society groups to ensure that schools in Kano remain safe environments for learning and healthy development.
