The Jigawa State Government says it is aiming to vaccinate 1,516,244 children under five in the next round of polio immunisation scheduled to hold across the 27 local government areas of the state.
Executive Secretary of the Jigawa Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr Sambo, disclosed this during a media dialogue on polio eradication held in Dutse. The session brought together social and youth influencers as part of efforts to deepen public awareness ahead of the exercise.
The campaign, organised by the Jigawa PHCDA in collaboration with the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA) and the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, will run from November 29 to December 2, 2025, covering 287 political wards.
Speaking at the event, Rahama Rihood M. Farah, Chief of the UNICEF Field Office in Kano, said the media plays a crucial role in strengthening child health interventions and supporting Nigeria’s push to eradicate polio.
He said the country plans to vaccinate 42 million children across 21 high-risk states in two phases between November 29 and December 9, 2025.
Farah, however, noted that despite efforts, Nigeria has recorded 72 confirmed cVPV2 cases this year from 49 LGAs in 14 states, warning that the virus “respects no boundaries”.
He said achieving the national target requires at least 95 percent coverage in every round of the campaign, alongside stronger Routine Immunisation (RI) systems.
“Every LGA must ensure that at least 80 percent of children aged 0–11 months receive all three doses of the Penta vaccine,” he said.
