Kwankwaso-Led Congresses Unconstitutional, NNPP Tells INEC

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Nigerians to disregard congresses purportedly organised by the Kwankwasiya Movement led by Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, describing them as unconstitutional.

In a statement on Monday, NNPP National Secretary, Mr. Ogini Olaposi, said the party’s court-ordered congresses had already been conducted and concluded.

Olaposi noted that the Kwankwaso-led group recently informed INEC of plans to hold fresh congresses and a convention from November 25, 2025, to January 2026. He said the group had no authority to conduct congresses on behalf of NNPP, as the Memorandum of Association signed with them ahead of the 2023 presidential election had long expired.

The NNPP also reiterated that Kwankwaso, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, and some members of his group had been expelled for anti-party activities.

“We are still amazed that a man of Kwankwaso’s standing will insist on hijacking a party that gave him a soft landing to contest the 2023 presidential election,” the statement said.

Olaposi urged INEC to respect court orders and display the authentic leadership of NNPP on its website. He referenced the Abia State High Court and the Federal Capital Territory High Court rulings confirming the expulsion of Kwankwaso and his group from the party’s internal processes.

“It is unfortunate that Kwankwaso continues to disobey court judgments. INEC, as an umpire, cannot afford to sit on the fence on matters of urgent importance to peace and democracy,” the party added.

The NNPP also expressed concern that INEC had not responded to letters demanding enforcement of court judgments and warned members to disregard the “fake congresses and conventions.”

“Once again, we appeal to INEC to help democracy succeed in Nigeria. The success of the Renewed Hope Agenda depends on obedience to the law,” the statement concluded.
