The White House and several government buildings were placed on lockdown on Wednesday following a shooting incident near the presidential residence.
Two members of the U.S. National Guard were shot during the incident.
Gov. Patrick Morrisey, who earlier said the Guard members had died, later clarified that he was receiving “conflicting reports’’ on their conditions.
“We are now receiving conflicting reports about the condition of our two Guard members and will provide additional updates once we receive more complete information,” Morrisey posted on X.
He urged the public to keep the wounded service members and their families in their prayers.
According to U.S. media reports, President Donald Trump was at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach, Florida, at the time of the shooting.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the administration was monitoring the situation and that the President had been briefed.
The Metropolitan Police Department of Washington, D.C., confirmed that a suspect in the shooting had been taken into custody.
National Guard troops have been deployed in Washington, D.C., for months as part of Trump’s anti-crime initiative in the U.S. capital.
Reacting on his Truth Social platform, Trump said the suspect responsible for shooting the two Guardsmen was also wounded and “will pay a very steep price.”
