Gunmen suspected to be bandits have invaded Yankamaye village in the Tsanyawa Local Government Area of Kano State, killing an elderly woman and abducting three residents.
The attack, which occurred around 11pm on Saturday, threw the quiet community into panic as many villagers were already asleep when the assailants struck.
Residents told newsmen that the attackers rode to the outskirts of the community on motorcycles before proceeding on foot to avoid drawing attention.
According to one of the sources, the bandits shot an elderly woman dead after she pleaded with them not to take away her son.
“They killed her because she begged them not to go with her son. They shot her and still abducted him,” a villager who spoke on condition of anonymity said.
The attackers reportedly moved to another house, where they whisked away two women, one of whom is said to be the sister-in-law of the ward councillor.
Efforts to get the reaction of the Kano State Police Command were unsuccessful, as the spokesperson had yet to respond to inquiries as of the time of filing this report.
Yankamaye, located about 5 kilometres from Rimaye town in neighbouring Katsina State, has suffered recurrent bandit attacks, especially after nearby Katsina communities entered into a “peace accord” with the criminal groups.
Other communities in the area, including Sundu and Buresawa, have also been experiencing similar raids.
Only on Monday, at least eight residents were abducted during a night raid on Biresawa village.
