Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf says his administration will procure drones and other surveillance equipment to boost security along the border with Katsina State.
The governor disclosed this on Wednesday during a visit to Joint Task Force (JTF) bases in Tsanyawa and Shanono, where recent attacks were carried out by armed groups.
His spokesman, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, said in a statement that the deployment of drones is part of measures to improve intelligence gathering and response in the affected areas.
Governor Yusuf urged residents to assist security agencies with information that could help track the attackers.
He said he had already briefed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the situation and received assurances of federal support.
Yusuf also tasked the JTF with intensifying efforts to rescue residents abducted during the attacks in both local government areas.
“We are aware of the attacks on innocent communities, particularly here in Tsanyawa and Shanono,” he said, adding that several people were killed while others fled into the bush. He expressed confidence that the kidnapped victims would be freed.
The governor told troops that his visit was to assess the security situation and encourage them to remain committed to their operations. He described the recent wave of attacks as a worrisome development in Kano State.
He also assured the personnel of continued government support and pledged to address their welfare concerns.
During the visit, Yusuf met families of the abducted victims and offered his condolences.
Local officials said about five people were kidnapped in Tsanyawa and around ten in Shanono, while one woman was reported killed.
