Tragedies have struck three local government areas of Kano State, leading to the deaths of five persons, including two children.
The incidents occurred in Bichi, Danbatta and Nassarawa local government areas of the state.
The Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Abdullahi, confirmed the incidents in a statement on Saturday.
According to him, three persons lost their lives at Badume Kanawa Village in Bichi Local Government Area while attempting to re-dig a well.
He said the incident happened when the rope being used snapped while one of the victims, Sa’idu Gada, aged about 65, was working inside the well.
“Our men from the agency’s headquarters rushed to the scene and discovered that three people were working on re-digging a well when the rope accidentally snapped while the father was inside,” Abdullahi said.
He added that Gada’s son, Sani Isyaku, aged about 20, entered the well in an attempt to rescue his father but was also trapped, while a third man, Yakubu Abdullahi, aged about 60, went in to rescue them without success.
The fire service spokesperson said the three victims were rescued unconscious and later confirmed dead.
He said their bodies were handed over to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Badume Police Division in Bichi Local Government Area, DSP Kabiru Iliyasu.
In a separate incident, Abdullahi said a boy of about 10 years old, identified as Hassan Iliyasu Haruna, died after falling into a well in Danbatta Local Government Area.
The third incident occurred at Badawa Layin Day in Nassarawa Local Government Area, where a 10-year-old girl died in a fire outbreak on Thursday, Dec. 4, 2025.
Abdullahi said the fire service received a distress call at about 11:57 a.m. and immediately mobilised its personnel to the scene.
“On arrival, they found a ground-floor building measuring about 25 by 20 feet, used as a dwelling house, engulfed in flames. Two bedrooms were affected,” he said.
He added that the girl was trapped in the building and rescued unconscious but was later confirmed dead.
Meanwhile, the Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Sani Anas, has advised members of the public to desist from entering wells to rescue trapped persons, warning that such actions often result in multiple fatalities.
