The Economic Community of West African States has declared a state of emergency across the sub-region over escalating security threats.
The President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Touray, made the declaration on Tuesday at the 55th session of the Mediation and Security Council at the ministerial level, held in Abuja.
According to Touray, the decision followed a wave of coups and failed mutinies that have continued to destabilise parts of the region.
He noted that the developments highlight the need for deep reflection on the future of democratic governance in West Africa, stressing the urgency of investing more in collective regional security.
The meeting brought together ministers and security officials from member states to deliberate on the growing challenges confronting the sub-region.
