Rivers State Governor, Mr Siminalayi Fubara, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Fubara announced his defection at a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Government House, Port Harcourt, on Tuesday.
He said the move was taken after wide consultations with political leaders and stakeholders in the state.
The defection came four days after the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Mr Martin Amaewhule, and 17 other lawmakers defected from the PDP to the APC on Dec. 5.
The lawmakers had cited the lingering crisis within the PDP as the reason for their decision.
Fubara’s defection makes him one of several governors who have joined the APC in recent months.
Before his defection, he was the only PDP governor in the South-South geopolitical zone, following the earlier exit of Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta in April and Gov. Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom in June.
