Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, is reportedly in the final stages of defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
It was gathered that the planned defection could be completed before the end of January 2026.
Sources close to the governor said Mutfwang has resolved to leave the PDP, the party on whose platform he won the 2023 governorship election, amid the lingering leadership crisis and deepening factionalisation within the opposition party.
It was further learnt that President Bola Tinubu has met with the Plateau governor and endorsed his proposed move to the APC.
However, it was understood that Mutfwang’s planned defection is facing resistance from some APC stakeholders in Plateau State, particularly those who earlier defected from the PDP.
Some of the aggrieved party members were said to be threatening to return to the PDP should Mutfwang eventually join the APC.
In response, the APC National Chairman, Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, who hails from Plateau State, has reportedly been engaging party leaders and stakeholders in a bid to resolve the internal disagreements and clear the way for the governor’s entry.
Recall that in October 2025, while addressing an audience at an event held at the Banquet Hall of the Government House in Jos, Mutfwang admitted he was under pressure from political actors to defect to the APC.
At the time, the governor insisted that only God and the electorate could determine his political future, drawing loud applause from the audience when he asked if they had asked him to leave the PDP.
Meanwhile, the wave of defections has continued to reshape Nigeria’s political landscape.
Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, recently resigned from the PDP and joined the Accord Party, citing unresolved crises within the party’s national leadership.
Similarly, Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, was expected to join the APC in November, but the event was postponed due to security challenges in the state.
With the defection of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, the APC currently controls 26 states.
The states not under the control of the ruling party are Abia, Adamawa, Anambra, Bauchi, Kano, Osun, Oyo, Plateau, Taraba and Zamfara.
