Benue State on Monday received a United States congressional delegation on a fact-finding visit over allegations of widespread attacks and possible genocide against Christian communities in Nigeria.
The delegation, led by US Congressman Riley Moore, met with Catholic bishops and the Tiv traditional ruler as part of its assessment of the situation in the state.
Moore announced the visit in a post on X, saying the team held discussions with Bishop Wilfred Anagbe, Bishop Isaac Dugu and the Tiv paramount ruler, His Royal Highness James Ioruza. He described the engagements as emotional and revealing.
“It was an honour and deeply moving to meet with His Excellency Bishop Wilfred Anagbe, Bishop Isaac Dugu, and His Royal Highness James Ioruza… to discuss the ongoing genocidal campaign by the Fulani in Benue State,” Moore wrote.
The congressman, who has been outspoken on violent attacks against Christian communities in Nigeria, said the concerns raised by the affected populations would no longer be ignored. He noted that the United States was closely monitoring developments and remained committed to supporting sustainable solutions.
Moore also disclosed that the delegation held talks with federal authorities, including the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu. According to him, discussions centred on terrorism in the North-East and recurring killings in the Middle Belt, which he said are priorities for US President Donald Trump.
He said the meetings explored practical measures that could significantly improve Nigeria’s security architecture if fully implemented. Moore also commended the recent rescue of 100 abducted Catholic schoolchildren, describing it as a positive indication of increased government responsiveness.
The lawmaker added that US concerns were well received by Nigerian officials, citing the establishment of a joint Nigeria–US task force as evidence of enhanced cooperation.
He, however, stressed that real progress would depend on translating assurances into consistent action.
Moore concluded his message with the words: “Peace be with you all. God bless the great people of Nigeria.”
