Coaches, officials and backroom staff of Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) newcomers, Barau FC, have protested the alleged deduction of their October and November salaries, demanding explanations from the club’s management.
The affected workers alleged that the deductions were made without prior notice or justification from the club’s leadership, including the President, Shawwal Barau Jibrin, and the General Manager, Dominic Lorfa.
According to the staff, they continued to discharge their duties diligently throughout the period despite having other outstanding entitlements yet to be settled.
A source within the club, who spoke anonymously, told Kano Times that the deductions were allegedly authorised by the General Manager.
“One of our colleagues discovered that over N100,000 was deducted from his October salary without any explanation,” the source said.
Another staff member said he initially assumed the shortfall was a mistake until the same amount was deducted from his November salary.
“When I noticed about N100,000 missing from my October salary, I thought it was an error. But when the November salary came with the same deduction and still no explanation, I became worried,” he said.
Some of the personnel also alleged unequal treatment in the implementation of the deductions, claiming that a member of the coaching crew perceived to be close to the management was not affected, raising concerns over transparency.
Barau FC was founded by the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, to promote youth development and address unemployment, particularly within his senatorial district.
Efforts to obtain reactions from the club’s management proved futile, as calls and messages sent to the President and the General Manager were not returned as of the time of filing this report.
