The Police Service Commission (PSC) has promoted several senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force to higher ranks following written examinations and oral interviews conducted at its Corporate Headquarters in Jabi, Abuja, on Wednesday, December 17, 2025.
Announcing the promotions in a statement signed by Torty Njoku Kalu, Head of Protocol and Public Affairs, the commission said the elevations cover officers from the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) to Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG).
According to the statement, AIG Mohammed Usman Gumel, previously Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Community Policing Project Department at Police Headquarters, was promoted to the rank of DIG. Seven Commissioners of Police were also elevated to the rank of AIG, including CP Ihebom Chukwuma of the Force Criminal Investigation Department, Abuja, and CP Maxwell Olatokunbo of the K9 Unit.
Thirteen Deputy Commissioners of Police were promoted to Commissioners of Police, while thirty Assistant Commissioners of Police were elevated to Deputy Commissioners of Police. Fifty-one Chief Superintendents of Police advanced to Assistant Commissioners of Police, and 542 Superintendents of Police were promoted to Chief Superintendent of Police. The statement also noted the promotion of 119 Deputy Superintendents of Police to Superintendent of Police and twelve Assistant Superintendents of Police to Deputy Superintendents of Police.
Commenting on the promotions, PSC Chairman, DIG Hashimu Salihu Argungu (rtd), said: “Promotion comes with higher expectations. I congratulate all the officers and urge them to rededicate themselves to effective policing, protection of lives and property, and the maintenance of law and order.”
He further emphasized the need for commitment, adding, “The Commission remains committed to ensuring regular, merit-based promotions in line with global best practices.”
The commission urged the newly promoted officers to brace themselves for their new responsibilities with integrity, diligence, and a strong sense of service to the nation.
