Suspected Boko Haram insurgents on Wednesday detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) at a Juma’at Mosque in Gamboru Ward, near the Customs area in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
The attack occurred around 6:10 p.m., less than 12 hours to Christmas, as Muslim worshippers were performing the Maghrib prayer.
While details of the incident remain sketchy, residents told reporters that several worshippers were either killed or injured in the explosion.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Nahum Daso, could not immediately confirm the blast but said he was on his way to the scene to assess the situation.
The suspected bombing has heightened fear among residents, particularly Christians preparing for the 2025 Christmas celebrations.
Security operatives have cordoned off the area to prevent further casualties and carry out a preliminary assessment of the incident.
