Renowned Nigerian writer, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, has denied claims that she was appointed as a visiting professor at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).
Adichie’s communications team, led by Omawumi Ogbe, dismissed the reports in a statement on Wednesday, describing them as entirely false.
Ogbe said, “It has come to our attention that several news outlets are reporting that Ms. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has been appointed as a ‘Visiting Professor’ at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. We wish to state categorically that this information is entirely false. Ms. Adichie has not received any such appointment, nor has she been in communication with the University regarding a professorship.”
The statement added that while UNN holds a special place in Adichie’s heart—having grown up there and with her parents serving as Professor and Registrar—she is disappointed that unverified information of this magnitude was circulated.
She urged the public and media to disregard the reports and requested that outlets remove the news to prevent further misinformation.
The clarification comes after UNN had announced the appointment of Adichie alongside African Development Bank executive, Prof. Kevin Urama, and Prof. James Robinson of the University of Chicago as visiting professors.
The appointments, approved by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Simon Ortuanya through letters dated December 18, 2025, were said to be part of the institution’s plan to enhance its global academic profile.
