Political commentator Mahdi Shehu has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate and prosecute Sabiu ‘Tunde’ Yusuf, a nephew of the late President Muhammadu Buhari, over alleged unexplained wealth.
Shehu, a Kaduna-based controversial activist and critic, made the remarks in a post shared on his X account on Wednesday.
Addressing the EFCC directly, he wrote, “When will you arrest and charge to court Buhari’s PA, Sabiu Tunde? As long as you don’t arrest Sabiu Tunde and evaluate his material possessions from the point of view of the pauper he was before 2015, the more you will be reinforcing the public perception about the selective nature of your so-called fight against corruption.”
He further warned that failure to act would undermine the agency’s credibility, adding, “If you fail to do just that, then you lose all justification to continue harassing Yahoo-Yahoo boys, who are victims of the same system that produces and protects the likes of Sabiu Tunde.”
Shehu’s statement comes amid ongoing EFCC investigations into ministers who served under the late President Buhari over allegations of corruption.
The anti-graft agency recently arraigned former Minister of Labour, Dr. Chris Ngige, on N2.2 billion fraud charges. Similarly, former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, faces 16 counts filed against him, his son, Abubakar Malami Jr., and Bashir Asabe, an employee of Rahamaniyya Properties Ltd.
The charges include money laundering, concealment, and unlawful acquisition of proceeds of illegal activity. The offenses are alleged to have occurred between 2015 and 2023, covering Malami’s eight-year tenure as AGF under Buhari.
Documents indicate that Malami is linked to 41 properties across Kebbi, Kano, and Abuja, with a combined estimated value of N212.89 billion. The assets include hotels, schools, factories, and residential properties.
The revelations came days after the EFCC conducted operations at Malami’s homes and offices in Abuja and Kebbi State on December 17. He has consistently denied wrongdoing and is challenging the charges in court.
Malami was previously detained by the EFCC on December 8 in connection with a multi-billion-naira money laundering investigation. While the EFCC confirmed the operation, it rejected claims that it was a raid.
He served as Nigeria’s Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice from 2015 to 2023 under former President Buhari. A founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Malami recently defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and has declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Kebbi State.
