Hon. Abdullahi Zubairu Abiya has been appointed as the Acting State Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in Kano State, following the removal of the former State Chairman, Hashimu Dungurawa, who is aligned with the party’s national leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
The appointment was confirmed by the NNPP State Executive Committee during an emergency meeting held at the party’s secretariat in Kano.
Barrister Yusuf Mukhtar, the Assistant Legal Adviser of the party, announced the development, saying, “The appointment of Hon. Abiya is in line with the provisions of the NNPP constitution.”
Sources within the party revealed that the decision followed a formal resolution submitted by the Dawakin Tofa Local Government Executive Committee, which recommended the sacking and expulsion of Dungurawa over alleged anti-party activities.
The Dawakin Tofa EXCO, led by Hon. Abdullahi Ali Uban Iya Dawanau, transmitted the resolution—initially forwarded by the Gargari Ward Executive—to the state leadership of the party. The resolution was adopted at the second executive meeting of the Gargari Ward, held two weeks after the general election.
After reviewing the report, the State Executive Committee endorsed the decision and approved Abiya’s emergence as Acting State Chairman. Party officials said the move aims “to restore internal discipline, strengthen party cohesion, and reposition the NNPP for future political engagements in Kano State.”
Abiya, a supporter of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s anticipated move to the All Progressives Congress (APC), was appointed barely 24 hours after executives of Gargari Ward in Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area signed a resolution purportedly expelling Hashimu Dungurawa from the party.
Reacting to his appointment, Abiya said, “The party will do justice to all manner of people and remain loyal to our national leader, Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and Kano State Governor, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf.”
The Kano State NNPP has been experiencing internal tensions, particularly following rumours of a possible defection by the governor to the APC, which has triggered mixed reactions among party members.
