Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr Peter Obi, has defected to the coalition-backed African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Obi, a former Governor of Anambra State, announced his defection on Tuesday at an event held at the Nike Lake Resort, Enugu.
Addressing supporters and party stakeholders at the event, Obi said the decision was informed by the need to commence what he described as a national rescue mission.
“We are ending this year with the hope that in 2026 we will begin a rescue journey,” he said.
He added that the ADC would pursue credible elections across the country strictly through lawful means.
“We will resist the rigging of elections by every lawful means in 2027,” Obi stated.
The former LP standard-bearer also urged Nigerians, particularly political office holders, to use the available time to regularise their academic credentials.
“We still have a one-year window for everyone to go and verify the schools they attended,” he said.
According to him, early verification would help prevent avoidable legal battles arising from electoral disputes.
“We do not want to return to court again only to be told it is a pre-election matter. The pre-election process should start now,” Obi said.
The event was attended by top party officials, including the National Chairman of the ADC, Senator David Mark.
