7 Die, 14 Injured in Jigawa Road Crash

No fewer than seven persons have lost their lives, while 14 others sustained injuries in a road accident in Jigawa State, the police have confirmed.

The Jigawa State Police Command disclosed this in a statement issued to newsmen on Sunday by its spokesman, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam.

According to the statement, the accident occurred on Sunday evening along the Chaichai–Ringim Road following a head-on collision between two vehicles.

Adam said the crash happened at Yakasawa village in Ringim Local Government Area and involved a Golf 3 wagon and a Sienna vehicle.

“Seven persons died on the spot, while 14 others sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rushed to the Ringim General Hospital for treatment,” he said.

The spokesman added that the injured victims were currently receiving medical attention at the hospital.

He warned motorists against dangerous overtaking and overloading of passengers and goods, and urged road users to strictly adhere to traffic rules and regulations to prevent avoidable accidents.

The incident came just days after about 50 people lost their lives in separate road accidents and a canoe capsize in parts of the state.

Residents have attributed the frequent accidents to reckless driving and overloading, calling on relevant authorities to intensify enforcement of traffic laws to curb the growing menace.
