The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has urged governments at all levels to urgently review workers’ salaries and allowances, citing the rising cost of living and persistent inflation across the country.
The labour centre made the call in a statement issued on Monday by its President, Mr Festus Osifo, and General Secretary, Mr Nuhu Toro, expressing concern over the economic pressures facing Nigerian workers as the country enters 2026.
“As we step into 2026, Congress remains deeply concerned about the harsh economic realities confronting workers,” the statement said.
According to the TUC, prevailing economic conditions have significantly eroded workers’ purchasing power, making it necessary for governments to strengthen social welfare packages, particularly through the payment of enhanced allowances, to cushion the effects of inflation.
The Congress said the review of workers’ allowances should serve as an immediate relief measure while awaiting the full implementation of a new National Minimum Wage expected in 2027, in line with existing labour laws.
“In view of persistent inflation and rising living costs, the TUC calls on governments at all levels to urgently review and enhance workers’ allowances as a temporary relief measure, pending the full implementation of a new National Minimum Wage in 2027, in line with the Labour Act,” it said.
The TUC warned that workers should not be made to bear the burden of ongoing economic reforms without adequate safeguards.
“Nigerian workers must not be left to shoulder the burden of economic reforms without adequate protection and support,” the statement added.
The Congress also called on workers to remain united despite the economic challenges, reaffirming its commitment to the defence of workers’ rights and welfare.
“Comrades, unity remains our greatest strength. Let us move into 2026 with renewed resolve, strengthened solidarity, and unwavering commitment to the ideals that bind us together.
“Together, we shall continue to build a labour movement that stands firmly for workers and for Nigeria,” the statement said.
